I recently had the pleasure to photograph Brie and Michael’s Kaibo Beach Wedding.
Michael and Gabriella both grew up in New Jersey about 25 minutes away from each other. Michael’s best friend Ricky, and Gabriella’s best friend Nicole happened to be cousins. Ricky and Nicole are from a big Cuban family, and Michael and Gabriella would run into each other at all of their family parties. While they both saw something special in one another, the timing was never right, and they both had some growing up to do. Gabriella moved to California for four years, but Michael never forgot about her. In June of 2014, Michael heard Gabriella was in New Jersey visiting family, and asked her out on their first date to Bolton and Watt in the East Village of Manhattan.
Brie told me this is what happened after that first date: “After our dinner and drinks I accidentally left my jean jacket in his car which he returned to me before I flew back home to LA. About 2 months later I wore this jacket again and stuck my hands in the pocket and found a love note Michael had left for me in there. Since it had taken me so long to find it Michael was worried that I did not receive it well. When I expressed my joy after finding it he was so relieved. I still have the note and it is one of my favorite memories of us and one of my most cherished possessions that we hope to share with our future children one day. Our officiant told this story of our love during the ceremony as well.”
I also asked her a few more questions.
Can you tell us something cute or unique about your wedding?
Michael and I took dance lessons for 5 months prior to the wedding and learned a full two part choreographed dance. We also chose our venue at Kaibo and put a deposit down before we had even visited Cayman. We took a leap of faith and everything worked out even better than we could have ever imagined.
How did he pop the question?
On one of the outdoor terraces at the Whitney Museum in NYC. This is one of our favorite places to visit and walk around in the city. After he popped the question we went to an Italian nearby restaurant nearby where our family was waiting for us to surprise me.
What was your favourite moments from the wedding?
Walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Michaels face for the first time that day, our first dance, wishing lantern, speeches, and dancing the night away under the stars.
How would you describe your overall wedding experience?
AMAZING! It turned out better than we could have ever imagined. Spending a full week in Cayman with all the people we love and cherish most in our lives was the best thing we could have ever done. The weather was perfect the entire week, the beaches are beautiful, the people on the island are so nice, and the food is amazing! We loved our stay at Coral Stone Club Condos and we ended up having our welcome party there the night before the wedding by the pool area. It was catered by Llyod from Casa 43 and the food and drinks we awesome. We also had a steel drummer playing music which was a really nice touch. The day after the wedding we decided to take all of our guests out on a Catamaran for the day, this was one of my favorite parts of the week besides the wedding itself. We went to stingray city which was a very cool experience and then to Starfish point to swim around and hang out.
What advice would you offer other couples planning a destination wedding?Definitely do a destination wedding it is so nice to be able to celebrate for one week and have a vacation with your guests rather than just one day. Also, have faith in your wedding planner, they do this all the time and if you let them they can make things a lot easier on you. Lastly, do it in CAYMAN because CAYMAN is the best and we cannot wait to come back and visit.
